Myspace Monday 5/04

I'm gonna be out of town for the next couple of days, so here comes part of Monday's update early.... apologies...

This week I will focus on Indie/hipster style hip-hop artist, following in the wake of Kid Cudi and similar artists. Inspired almost as much by grunge/alt rock as rap music, this new young breed of musicians is certaily of the ipod generation that listens to all genres of music on shuffle and blend the genre together.

One up-and-coming indie/hipster rapper to watch out for is Darren Isaiah, a rapper from Manhattan. Dude has real nice lyrics and kicks topics everyone can relate to -from school to drama with the bittiesto stress/depression... He's also got a hilarious parody of My President is Black. Song starts with Darren describing a situation where a chick wouldnt come over unless he descibed his meat to her... prompting this...

My pubic hair is black. My dick shaft too. If you don't let me smash than my balls gon' be blue. My pubic hair is black, in forty years it be grey. I'm headed for the top, anybody feel me?

FaHim-
FaHim, hailing from Brooklyn, was born in Bangladesh and came to this country when he was five. He was raised by the streets, getting involved in gang life at an early age. Fahim has spent much of his young life bouncing between prisons and homeless shelters. FaHim uses his gifts on the mic and his masterful lyrics to spread his message of oppression and government injustice. FaHim blends battle-hardened swag with moral sensibility, to create a multi-dimensioned rapper. If you like fellow NYC lyricists such as Nas, Immortal Technique, and Saigon you will probably enjoy FaHim.

Maveric-
I know that after McCain/Palin used this word till your ears bled, you might be nauseous from the sight of "maveric" in text. But don't sleep on this MC from Brooklyn. Maveric does not fit the stereotypical mold of the current rapper. He is not the product of a broken and fatherless home. He does not rap about violence, drugs, and gang life. He raps about everyday struggles and brings an uplifting message. In his track, Feels So Good, he rhymes, "I thanks gods for my mom and my pastor, if it wasn't for a wise counsel I'd have been a disaster... I used to testify how I feel so hood, now I go around sayin' how I feel so good. It's a blessing takin' care of your health, but it's even more than just a blessin' when you bein' yourself." With Maveric, there is no fronting, no claiming to be anything that he is not. No apologies. Take it or leave it. I suggest you at least take a listen.

Asher Roth Live (NYC)

This week I had the pleasure of attending Asher Roth's record release party at Blender Theater at Gramercy. Now I've been bumping Asher for a minute now, and so I was anxious to see him live and see if he lived up to his hype for putting on a killer set. No dissapointment here. Asher Roth is the real deal, a throw back to the classic spirit of rap. Songs about good times.

With Asher, what you see is what you get. There is no fronting. No claiming to be hardcore or gangster. He is a corny white boy from the suburbs, and he makes no effort to claim otherwise. Instead of borrowing the lives of movie characters, he raps about things he knows (beer pong, mario kart, blunt crusin', and mackin' on the girlies).

Street Poetry NYC launches

I love hip-hop music and everything it stands for -its powerful voice of self expression and its rebellious ability to challenge the system... thats why it pains me so much to see the direction in which hip-hop music has been headed for far too long. Artists like Grandmaster Flash, KRS-One, Public Enemy, 2pac, Biggie, Nas, and Jay-z used the mic to poetically highlight the struggle of the opressed and impoverished. They made powerful, frightening, and beautiful music. Today, the radio is dominated by artists like Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, T-pain, and Akon. Where is the message? Where is the original spirit of hip-hop? However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, an underground scene full of promise to carry the torch of hip-hop, and lead it back to the goldenage. Hip-hop isnt dead... its just been dormant for far to long.

This blog will be about exploring everything about hip-hop that keeps me coming back and gives me so much hope for a rebirth of greatness.
